First appearing as playable character class in the Eldritch Wizardry Supplement of 1976, Druids were inspired by the pre-Christian Celtic priests of the same name. While they can specialize in many aspects of nature in game, a key mechanic is their ability to turn into animals with Wild Shape. Druids were officially inducted into the ranks of main classes under as part of the Priest metaclass in the Player’s Handbook of 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in 1989.
